The Cover of the 5th Generation Management

"In 1991 I named Fifth Generation Management my business book of the year. I find the new subtitle of this revised edition Co-creating through Virtual Enterprising, Dynamic Teaming and Knowledge Networking, captures exceptionally well the shift in focus over the last five years... Our challenge is not to 'get it right' so we can put the organization on automatic pilot, but to participate in the drama of co-creation..." -- Tom Peters, from the Foreword.

"Can we discover ways to more effectively engage in the present, because we can mine the past and envision the future? ... ?Charles Savage helps us understand how we blend the color and texture of one another's ideas through virtual enterprising, dynamic teaming, and knowledge networking..." -- Daniel Burrus, from the Afterword.

This revised edition of Fifth Generation Management helps executives out of the rigid mindsets of the Industrial Era into the vibrant and invigorating possibilities of co-creation in the Knowledge Era. Divided into two parts, the first completely rewritten section narrates `Five Days that Change the Enterprise,' a case study of senior executives who are forced out of their cozy little empires into a new network organization of their own design. The second part discusses the process of co-creation through virtual enterprising, dynamic teaming, and knowledge networking. Included is essential new information on fractal enterprises, holonic management systems, agile enterprises, and hypertext organizations.

Fifth Generation Management recaptures a deeper understanding of the nature of human work and human time. The value chain is hopelessly out of date; instead, we need to master the "valuing cluster" between our companies, suppliers, customers, and customers' customers. As we actively value one another's capabilities and aspirations, we can decode the significant patterns and network knowledgeable professionals to profitably seize significant market opportunities.

Dr. Charles M. Savage helps companies discover the riches of knowledge era enterprising. He consults and speaks widely in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Dr. Savage works with company presidents, division managers, and other senior executives committed to improving their business strategy, organizational agility, market responsiveness, and customer focus. Prior to forming his own company, Knowledge Era Enterprises, Inc., he was responsible for Digital Equipment Corporation's world wide Organizational Effectiveness Practice. He has a wide range of publications on Computer Integrated Manufacturing and other management topics. Dr. Savage earned his B.A. from Pomona College and his Ph.D. from Boston College.
